They took him away before I could hold him. I was still sobbing when my husband walked in and said, flatly, \u201cWhat a relief. Now I can leave you without guilt.\u201d In that moment, something inside me broke.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, as I left the hospital, a blind old woman stopped me. \u201cDon\u2019t throw it away. You\u2019ll regret it,\u201d she said, pressing something into my hand. It was a tiny pink baby hat. Inside it, a bracelet with ruby rhinestones. When I looked up, she was gone.<\/p>\n<p>I kept them, expecting someone to come back. No one did.<\/p>\n<p>Months passed. My husband and I divorced. I moved into a small flat and slowly learned how to exist again. My neighbor, Sam, was patient and kind. I pushed him away for over a year before finally agreeing to a date.<\/p>\n<p>Later, he took me to meet his family. On the wall was a portrait\u2014and my heart stopped. It was her. The woman from the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my grandma,\u201d Sam said. \u201cHer name was Ruby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed him the hat and bracelet. He was stunned. She had never told anyone.<\/p>\n<p>We married. I later gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
