I lay awake in the guest room, replaying every sharp word we had exchanged. Sleep wouldn\u2019t come. The quiet made everything feel louder in my head.<\/p>\n

Sometime later, I heard the door open.<\/p>\n

He stepped in quietly, probably to grab something from the dresser. I kept my eyes closed, pretending to sleep, unsure if I wanted him to know I was awake. Then he paused beside the bed.<\/p>\n

The mattress dipped slightly as he leaned closer. I felt his breath near my ear.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish\u2026\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

Then he stopped.<\/p>\n

The words hung there for a moment, unfinished and fragile. After a second, he stood up and left the room without saying anything more.<\/p>\n

I stared at the ceiling afterward, wondering what he had meant. I wish we hadn\u2019t argued? I wish things were easier? I wish I could take back what I said?<\/p>\n

The next morning we sat together at the kitchen table, coffee between us, talking about simple things first\u2014errands, the weather, the day ahead.<\/p>\n

Then he finally looked at me and finished the sentence.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish we could talk without hurting each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled, realizing that sometimes the words we almost say reveal the most.<\/p>\n
