Emily was twenty-eight when she met Richard, a successful businessman who was twenty years older than her.
At first, Emily wasn’t interested in his money. Richard was kind to her, listened to her problems, and treated her with respect. He often told her that age didn’t matter as long as two people trusted each other.
After a few years together, Richard completely trusted Emily.
He helped her pay for her apartment, bought her a car, and supported her whenever she wanted to start something new.
Emily knew he loved her deeply.
But eventually, Emily met Alex, a young man closer to her age.
Alex was charming, exciting, and made Emily feel young and admired. What began as innocent conversations slowly became a secret relationship.
Emily knew she was betraying Richard, but she kept telling herself that she was confused.
Then Alex told her about his dream of starting a business.
“I just need enough money to get started,” he said. “Once I’m successful, we can build a life together.”
Emily asked how much he needed.
Alex hesitated.
“About $100,000.”
Emily immediately thought of Richard.
She knew Richard had recently set aside $100,000 for an investment.
At first, she refused.
“I can’t take that money. It’s Richard’s.”
Alex looked disappointed.
“I thought you said you loved me.”
Those words changed everything.
Emily convinced herself that Richard had enough money and that she and Alex deserved a chance at happiness.
One afternoon, while Richard was away on a business trip, Emily accessed the account and secretly transferred the entire $100,000 to Alex.
She immediately called him.
“It’s done.”
Alex sounded excited.
“Thank you. I promise you won’t regret this.”
For the next few days, Emily believed she had made the right choice.
But then Alex stopped answering her messages.
At first, Emily thought he was busy.

His apartment was empty.
And the business he had promised to start didn’t exist.
Emily became terrified.

Then Richard returned home.

“Emily, did you move $100,000 from my account?”
She froze.
Richard looked at her carefully.
“Please tell me the truth.”
Emily began crying.

Richard’s face changed.

Emily admitted everything.
She told him about Alex.
She told him she had secretly been seeing him.

Richard sat down in silence.

“I could understand losing the money.”
Emily looked at him through tears.
“But I can’t understand how easily you betrayed the person who trusted you.”
Emily lowered her head.
“I thought Alex loved me.”
Richard shook his head.
“Did he?”
Emily couldn’t answer.
Richard helped her contact the authorities and gather the information they needed. They eventually discovered that Alex had done something similar to other people.
He had never planned to build a business with Emily.
He had simply seen an opportunity.
The money was eventually traced, and some of it was recovered.
But the relationship between Emily and Richard was beyond repair.
Before leaving, Emily asked Richard,
“Do you hate me?”
Richard looked at her sadly.
“No. I don’t hate you.”
He paused.

She paid back what she owed and cut ties with Alex completely.
