The Question I Never Expected — and Wasn’t Ready to Hear The Integrity of a Tenant: A Story of Moving Out

The flat I had been renting was put up for sale, which meant I had to find a new home. Before I finally handed over the keys, I spent hours cleaning every single corner until the place was spotless. The following day, my former landlady called me. My initial reaction was a surge of anxiety, fearing she had discovered something damaged or broken. To my surprise, she began thanking me for the state of the apartment.

Then, she asked a question that caught me off guard: “How is it that you’re… so diligent with a property that isn’t even yours anymore?”

How Learning the Truth Brought Our Family Closer Together
For a moment, I was speechless. I gave a nervous little laugh and explained that it was simply a matter of how I had been raised. My parents always instilled in me the belief that if you borrow something—even for a short time—you ought to return it in better condition than you found it.

There was a long silence on the other end of the line.

“In ten years, you are the first tenant to leave an apartment this way,” she eventually said. “Most people leave behind piles of trash, broken fixtures, or they simply vanish without saying a word.”

I wasn’t sure whether to feel a sense of pride or a touch of embarrassment.

She went on, “The prospective buyers are scheduled to view the flat tomorrow. Truly, you’ve made my life so much simpler.”

Another brief pause followed. Then she spoke quietly, “If you haven’t found a new place yet… my sister has an apartment available nearby. After seeing how respectfully you treated my property, I would trust you with hers without a second thought.”

I couldn’t help but smile.

It’s remarkable how the smallest actions—like cleaning up thoroughly before moving out—can open doors you never anticipated.
